How does Flame Arrestors work?
At the core of each SUPER flame arrestor is a unique crimped metal element. In section, this element presents a series of triangular passages or cells, the height, and length of which can be varied. To quench a flame, and so prevent its onward passage, requires that the height of the cells is below the Maximum Experimental safe gap (MESG) of the gas/vapour handled. This can vary with each type of gas or vapour. Similarly , the depth of the element needs to be sufficient to ensure that the flame is quenched within the element, and that the risk of re-ignition on the other side of the element is completely removed. As the flame enters the flame arrestor element, its temperature is progressively reduced, so that the gases are cooled to below the point where auto-ignition would occur when exiting the arrestor.
