A colostomy is a reversible surgical procedure in which a stoma is
formed by drawing the healthy end of the large intestine or colon
through an incision in the anterior abdominal wall and suturing it into
place. This opening, in conjunction with the attached stoma appliance,
provides an alternative channel for feces to leave the body.
A urostomy is a stoma (artificial opening) for the urinary system. A
urostomy is made in cases where long-term drainage of urine through the
bladder and urethra is not possible, e.g. after extensive surgery or in
case of obstruction.
A "continent urostomy" is an artificial bladder formed out of a segment
of small bowel. This is fashioned into a pouch, which can be emptied
intermittently with a catheter.
