Q. Why do some bikes have a side stand and a center stand?
Answer
Parking is supposed to be done using the side-stand so keep that in mind. In comparison to a centre stand it offers significantly increased lateral stability. It takes a great deal more effort to high-side a bicycle which means to push it over to the right from the side-stand on the left side of the bicycle than it does to tip it sideways off of the comparatively narrow footing of a center-stand. As long as the bike does not roll forward when it is leaning to the left on the broad leg of the stand it is totally stable in that position. Because of this if you ride a bike on a boat that goes through choppy seas the staff will instruct you to place the bike on the side stand rather than the centre stand. They will sometimes use chocks and high sidings as additional preventative measures to stop the bike from rolling ahead. When the bike is in gear a side-stand provides additional stability in the direction that the wheels are moving forward.
