Q. Why are mechanical shafts so important?
Answer
The shaft is an essential component of mechanical devices. They are supported by bearings that are located inside the rigid machine casing which allows them to in turn support rotating components such as pulleys and gears. Transmission of power from one spinning part to another that is supported by it or linked to it is the job of the shafts. Because of this they are susceptible to torque as a result of the transfer of power as well as bending moment as a result of the responses of the components that are sustained by them. Axles and shafts serve similar functions although axles only support spinning parts whereas shafts are responsible for power transmission.
