Dana Gabriel Fahrenheit an Amsterdam-based scientist devised the mercury-in-glass or mercury thermometer in the 1830s (1714). A mercury-filled bulb is secured to a thin glass tube with the tube holding a significantly less volume of mercury than the bulb.
