Q. Which is more durable laterite stone or brick?
Answer
Although both the stone and the brick are long-lasting the stone is the strongest of the two. As compared to concrete bricks the strength of laterite bricks is around a factor of five to ten lower. A maximum of 2 MPa has been measured in stress tests conducted on laterite bricks whereas 5 MPa has been measured in baked laterites. Contrarily when strengthened with steel concrete bricks may withstand pressures of 15 to 25 psi. This improves the durability of concrete structures. It's conclusive evidence that laterite can't be used for structures with more than three stories. Furthermore as compared to concrete bricks they have weaker interlocking and are more likely to shatter.
