A variable voltage regulator generates a DC output voltage that is adaptable to any other value within a certain voltage range. As a consequence of this a variable voltage regulator is another name for an adjustable voltage regulator. A voltage regulator that is adjustable may provide either a positive or a negative value for the DC output voltage value. The LM317 voltage regulator IC has three pins in its design. The output voltage may be altered by using the first pin collected by using the second pin and connected to the input using the third pin.
