For power measurements the optical power meter typically displays in dBm whereas loss readings are displayed in dB relative to a user-defined reference value. Most power meters range from +3 to -50 dBm while lasers and LEDs typically operate between 0 and -10 dBm and -10 and -20 dBm respectively. Up to +20 dBm or 100 mW or 1/10th of a watt is the maximum strength of lasers used in CATV or long-haul telephone networks making them extremely dangerous. Depending on the source's output power and the detector's sensitivity they will obtain different range measurements.
