Q. What is the importance of garland exchange?
Answer
In Indian tradition garlands hold a distinct set of values and meanings. Every cultural function across India or a religion function such as marriage pooja funeral etc mandates the use of garlands. A garland is generally made out of flowers. In weddings across different religions of India garland exchange is an important ceremony. It starts with the groom putting the garland around the wife which is then reciprocated by the wife. This has a strong traditional meaning and it signifies the union of two distinct people having received the necessary permission to enter holy matrimony. As this is done in front of community members and relatives this also gives out a message that the community accepts the union of the two as a couple. Garland exchange also gives a deeper meaning that the husband and wife will share their duties and burdens together and approach life as one. Other than that even when guests are welcomed they are garlanded. Sweet-smelling flowers in the garland are considered to be a sign of a sweet and long-lasting fragrant memory or relationship.
