A continuous string of twisted synthetic or natural fibers is what we refer to as yarn whereas the thread that we use for sewing is a lengthy strand that is very thin and may be made of nylon cotton etc. Threads are used for activities such as darning embroidery and sewing whereas yarns are utilized for activities such as knitting crocheting weaving and sewing amongst others. In most cases the weight of yarn is greater than that of thread. In addition to this yarn is often thicker than threads are.
