Q. What is real satin made of?
Answer
While purists insist that real satin fabric can only be made from silk and silk alone, generally fabrics made from polyester, nylon, rayon, viscose and even cotton (sateen) are now gaining widespread acceptability as satin fabric as well, provided of course, that they are formed with an authentic satin weave. Thus, any fabric woven using a satin weave from filament fibres is satin fabric.A typical satin fabric will have a minimum of four wefts over one warp, and vice versa. An important characteristic of satin fabrics is the existence of long floats both lengthwise as well as transversely. These long floats contribute to a very high reflective ability of the fabric, compared to other fabrics, resulting in the characteristic sheen and rich lustre.
