Q. What happens when you rub an ebonite rod with wool?
Answer
When touched with wool ebonite rod takes on a negative charge while the wool becomes positively charged. As a result they take on a pair of charges that are exactly opposite one another. When a fur is rubbed against an ebonite rod electrons are transferred from the fur to the rod. Since the electrons in ebonite are bonded more loosely than in fur the latter material acquires a negative charge. An ebony rod has a negative charge whereas a fur pelt has a positive one. The ebony rod and silk fabric both have negative charges therefore they will reject each other if trying to get them close.
