Q. What fabric is used for the patient gown?
Answer
Disposable patient gowns typically consist of polypropylene spunbond or polypropylene spunbond-meltblown-spunbond (sms) both of which are three-layer non-woven textiles. Cotton muslin and other tight weaves coated with fluid-repellent chemicals have long been the standard for reusable surgical gowns. Fabrics with a spunbond construction are made by forcing molten polymer through a spinneret to create long thin filaments. When creating meltblown nonwovens a spun-melt method is used similar to that used when creating spunbond fibers. After filaments are extruded from the spinneret however a separate process takes place in which the fibers are instantly exposed to hot air streams moving at high speeds from both sides of the spinneret. Non-woven synthetic cloth is often used for disposable coveralls. Different materials will be fused together to boost strength lower permeability and perhaps even provide flame resistance as protection levels grow.
