While rubber flip-flops are known as "rubber slippers" in Hawaii and other Polynesian regions, the term "flip-flop" is more commonly used elsewhere. One of the few really global types of footwear available now, the slippers may be worn by persons of any age or gender. These rubber shoes consist only of a soft, cushioned sole, upon which the wearer's foot rests while the shoe is held in place at the forefoot in one of two methods. The classic style has a thin band that runs over the top of the foot, from the instep to the toes.
