Q. Is wired glass banned?

Answer

For doors sidelites and other impact-prone areas the use of conventional wired glass has been restricted since 2003. Unsecure wired glass is prohibited in all hazardous areas per the 2012 IBC. The Canadian General Standards Board eliminated the material from national building standards in 2017 while the United States International Building Code essentially banned its use in 2006. Traditional wired glass can be utilized in safe areas for up to 45 minutes albeit there are size restrictions to consider (because it cannot block radiant heat). Traditional wired glass may not cover more than 25% of a wall area due to heat transmission concerns even if impact safety is not a concern.
