Q. Is the main switch a breaker?
Answer
The initial electric switch in your house that has complete control over all of the circuits is referred to as the Main Switch. This switch is controlled by the KWH Meter provided by the public utility. If this Main Switch is also a Circuit Breaker in a Panel Board, in which case it is referred to as the Main Breaker, then this Main Breaker is responsible for controlling all of the branch circuit breakers. It's possible to utilize the Main Switch as a Fused Detached Switch as well. This large circuit breaker is referred to as the main breaker, and it plays an important part in the electrical system. The main breaker is responsible for providing the means to disconnect power to the entire circuit breaker panel, and as a result, it is responsible for turning off the power supply to the entire home. The main circuit breaker is basically the same as any other breaker; the only difference is that it is intended to manage the high amperage load that is carried by the main feeder cables that provide electrical power to the home. Because of this, the amperage rating on this breaker will be much higher than that of any other breaker in the box.
