NIC stands for network interface controller. A network interface controller (NIC) also referred to as an interface card (NIC) local area network (LAN) network adapter (NA) adapter (NIC) or physical network interface (PNI) is a piece of hardware used to link computers together in a network. It's inserted into computers to make them networked. It's a physical component that establishes a virtual link between computers and networks from within the host machine. In the past NICs were often implemented on add-on cards that were inserted into a computer's expansion slot. Because of the low cost and widespread adoption of the Ethernet standard a network interface is now standard on the motherboard of virtually all modern computers or is housed in a USB dongle.
