Stainless steel is thought to be stainless because it is practically rust-proof. Its chromium atoms are so tightly bound to its oxygen atoms that they form an almost impenetrable and rust-resistant coating. The oxygen atoms are trapped by this layer before they can link to the iron in steel preventing rust from forming.
