Q. Is satin the same as silk?
Answer
While satin is generally misrepresented as being a type of material or fibre, it is actually a type of weaving pattern. In fact, a satin weave is one of only three basic weave types for textiles, the other two being plain and twill. As such a satin fabric can be made from polyester, nylon and of course, silk. However, not all silks are woven in a satin weave and hence those are not satin fabrics. To the uninitiated, silk is a kind of natural fibre obtained from silkworm cocoons of various types. To summarize, all silks are not satin, and all satins are not silk.
