Sandpaper is considered as coarse. Sandpaper grit is measured in gauge numbers with lower numbers indicating larger coarser grits. In contrast to the highly coarse and harsh sandpaper represented by grit the exceedingly fine and smooth 1000-grit paper features incredibly little abrasive particles. The 40–50 grit range is common for coarse grits. Final smoothing can be done using medium-grit sandpaper (60-100 grit). Medium-grit sandpaper is ideal for first sanding of rough wood and removing planning markings. From 120 to 220 grit fine sandpapers are available. The various grits of sandpaper are best suited for various tasks and it can be difficult to choose the proper grit when first starting out.
