Q. Is rice husk compostable?
Answer
Rice husk and sawdust both have a high C/N ratio (more than 100), a high concentration of cellulose and lignin, and relatively low nutrient contents, making them unsuitable for composting on their own. If someone wants to add a layer of mulch to their garden or flower bed, rice hulls are a terrific option. There may be discernible rice hulls lingering in the compost, or it may be completely black and earthy, depending on how long the rice hulls were allowed to decompose. In one fell swoop, I was able to get the advantages of both rice hulls and compost. Because of their resistance to decomposition, rice hulls can extend the time it takes to complete a compost pile.
