This coating protects the paper by slowing down its degradation over time, preventing damage. The ones that do deteriorate, however, take a long time to reach this stage. Plastic plates, on the other hand, have some positive qualities: they are cheap, strong, and long-lasting. Also, making and delivering them is a breeze. Polystyrene, a polymer of the styrene chemical, is the material of choice for their production.
