Q. Is paper plate biodegradable?
Answer
Paper plates can be composted after use. Plastic coatings, such wax, are applied to the paper plates to protect the plates from being ruined by the water. This coating protects the paper by slowing down its degradation over time, preventing damage. The ones that do deteriorate, however, take a long time to reach this stage. Plastic plates, on the other hand, have some positive qualities: they are cheap, strong, and long-lasting. Also, making and delivering them is a breeze. Polystyrene, a polymer of the styrene chemical, is the material of choice for their production.
