Q. How much wiring is allowed in a switch box?
Answer
The smallest box, which is 2 by 4 inches and has a depth of 1 1/2 inches, is only capable of splicing two cables, but the biggest box, which measures 4 by 4 inches and has a depth of 2 1/8 inches, is capable of splicing up to six cables. The overall volume of 18 cubic inches may hold either nine wires with a gauge of #14 or eight wires with a gauge of #12 or seven wires with a gauge of #10. This capacity is reserved only for wires. After adding one more piece of equipment to the electrical outlet box, remove two wires from each of the categories. There are no limitations imposed on the number of junction boxes (that are not containing devices) that may be used in a certain circuit. Each piece of "Utilization equipment" brings down the maximum allowable load by its nameplate rating, which is 180 volts for each outlet, and each light fixture brings down the maximum allowable bulb wattage for its maximum specified lamp.
