Q. How is nickel powder made?
Answer
In order to get pure nickel a procedure known as the nickel carbonyl gas process is used. Nickel's reaction with carbon monoxide results in the formation of nickel carbonyl gas also known as Ni(CO)4 which when subjected to temperatures in the moderate range may be degraded back into nickel metal along with the recovery of carbon monoxide. Fine and ultrafine powders of nickel may be produced using the process of thermal shock breakdown. In this manner refineries in North America and Britain are each capable of processing up to 50000 tonnes of nickel per year resulting in the production of a diverse array of various goods.
