Q. Can I install my own electric meter box?
Answer
You can do a part of the work, but an electrician is necessary for safety. The actual meter box is a rectangular metal box that has a lid with knockout slots on the rear, top, and bottom for wires that are coming in and going out of the building. After you have punched out one of the knockouts, you are required to install a threaded coupling that has been authorized. After the box has been placed, the electricians will install a conduit that links to either a subsurface in-feed conduit or an above-weather head, based on how the electricity is provided to the building. This will take place after the box has been mounted. The next step is to connect the cable that has been fed into the box (which is typically a 4/0 aluminum stranded cable) to the lugs that are already present in the box.
