Incense Sticks are known as Agarbatti in India. This is also known as joss sticks. So, as the name suggests, this is manufactured in stick form with a paste moulded around a bamboo stick. The major ingredient of the paste charcoal powder or jiggit powder, which is an adhesive extracted from the bark of litsea glutinosa. Perfume is added to the paste to get different kinds of aroma. Perfume could be in the form of solvent or essential oils.

Aromatic Incense Sticks denote religious symbolism. In general, these are lit in front of idols, deities or shrines of religious preachers. Many different kinds of aroma in the form of sandal, aloe, rose, mogra, tulip and others are produced. Different manufacturers use different brands and pack styles to establish a distinct identity of their Aromatic Incense Sticks.

Until 2015, India was the largest of exporter of incense sticks but to reduced import tariffs as part of India-ASAN FTA, the export from India has been reduced.
