What is Surveillance Equipment
Introduction
To collect, record, retain, or share any audio, process, intercept, analyze, monitor, location, thermal, biometric, or similar information, visual, digital, or communication systems caused solely with, or capable of being associated with, any specific individual or group, surveillance equipment includes any system, device, or driver that is equipped with an electronic surveillance device, hardware, or software.
Mounted surveillance equipment outside of a building or vehicle is not considered invasive unless it routinely and reliably produces data at the same quality and level of detail as would be obtained from inside the building or vehicle.
Different categories of Surveillance Equipment
1. Computer Surveillance
Data storage and internet traffic can be recorded by software installed on a computer's hard drive (often as a virus). Electromagnetic emissions from a computer's screen and keyboard can also be detected by specialized equipment, which can then be used to infer the contents of the screen and the text being typed.
2. Signal Interception
Instruments for monitoring signals can also be used to eavesdrop on electronic and radio transmissions. Phone lines and switchboards are prime targets for electronic bugs that may redirect calls and listen in on conversations.
Conversations broadcast over the airways can be listened to with the use of radio equipment.
However, depending on factors like weather, the direction of the transmission, and whether or not the discussion is being held in code, the outcome of such an approach can be unpredictable at best.
3. Signals Tracking device
Small radio frequency ID tags can be attached to items or people and read from a distance of several meters. When scanned, a tag's unique signal identifies its wearer.
Larger transmitters, such as global positioning system (GPS) units, utilize satellite networks to gain significantly higher range and are frequently used for covertly following vehicles.
GPS tagging could also be used by researchers to observe animal migrations.
4. Audio Surveillance Equipment
Conversations are typically intercepted using small, unobtrusive microphones. Parabolic microphones are useful in noisy environments since they pick up sound from a single direction.
In order to record sound, laser microphones send a beam of laser light crashing into a solid surface, where it is modified by surface vibrations induced by sound waves before being sent back to the original transmitter. Even when the phone is turned "off," it is still possible to record sound through the mouthpiece.
5. Cameras
The capabilities of digital cameras continue to grow while their size and price drop. This, combined with the convenience of digital photo analysis and manipulation, has led to the gradual demise of analog cameras for most applications.
Microelectronics allows for the miniaturization of these devices, making them less conspicuous. Smaller Surveillance Equipment often has a lower resolution, but when placed in close proximity to the target, it provides a sufficient capability (s).
While software can be used to compile and analyze footage, it has limited capabilities when it comes to identifying specific people or things within the footage. There are other more expensive cameras that can capture images outside of the visible light spectrum.
While most models only offer infrared imaging, others can capture images with various forms of electromagnetic radiation (such as x-rays or gamma rays).
Large and small cameras alike have been used for surveillance and monitoring for decades. There are now an estimated 350 million CCTV cameras in use around the world as of 2016. CCTV was first implemented in the 1920s in Moscow for Kremlin state surveillance. It's not uncommon for them to have some sort of recording or Internet Protocol (IP) connection.
6. Biometric Surveillance
Biometric surveillance is a technique that uses a person's unique biological or behavioral traits as authentication keys. Fingerprints, DNA, facial features, stride, and voice are all examples.
Facial recognition is a method of identifying a person solely based on a visual representation of their face, often taken from a security camera image. The Department of Homeland Security and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency both continue to invest significantly in this field of technology. Therefore, the Information Processing Technology Office developed a program called Human Identification at a Distance that can recognize a person's face from a distance of up to 500 feet away.
7. Telephone
Actually, wiretapping is common practice on a global scale, both legally and illegally. In the United States, for instance, law enforcement authorities are authorized to wiretap all phone calls and Internet Protocol (IP)-based communications in real time under the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA).
For this reason, AT&T and Verizon, two of the major phone companies in the country, have contracts with the FBI requiring them to make their call records available to the government. The annual cost to the businesses for this is $1.8 million.
Over the course of just 2 years, the FBI issued over 140,000 "National Security Letters," in which it demanded access to customers' call and internet records from various phone companies. Half of them were looking for information about American people.
Importance of Surveillance Equipment
1. Protect the company
Theft and vandalism can be prevented by installing video surveillance equipment both inside and outside the building. The footage will aid the police in their investigation. Thefts by employees are often caught on tape by surveillance cameras.
2. Protect the Employees
Workers benefit from both direct and indirect security provided by video monitoring equipment. Installing security cameras outside the building and in the parking garage will record any suspicious activity and help guards make sure workers make it safely to their cars.
3. Increase productivity
Managers and supervisors may keep an eye on production, pinpoint problem areas in workers' performance, and make sure everyone stays safe by using video surveillance. Cameras in the facility can help maintenance staff identify broken or otherwise hazardous pieces of machinery.
4. Customer records
The usage of video surveillance equipment in retail settings allows for the monitoring of customer activity. If a customer claims to have purchased an expensive item from a business but cannot produce the receipt, surveillance footage can be reviewed to ascertain whether or not she actually shopped there on the date in question and whether or not she made the corresponding transaction.
Applications of Surveillance Equipment
1. Human Detection
YOLOv7 is just one example of an object detection technique that can be used for people detection. Intelligent video surveillance equipment must have the ability to automatically recognize the presence of a single person or a group of people.
2. Recognizing Person
In order to identify and properly identify individuals, several security surveillance equipments uses face recognition software. Overarching, AI-based people recognition software combines various steps to detect faces, clip the face region, apply picture classification, and then match it against a database.
3. Detection of Weapon and Dangerous object
Using deep learning, real-time object identification can identify and pinpoint objects in videos in real-time. Detecting weapons (such firearms or knives) or other safety items is a common use case for object recognition technology in the field of security.
4. Understanding Human Behavior
In video surveillance equipment, understanding human behavior requires the use of person detection, classification, and tracking. Classification models can be trained to recognize certain human activities based on learned behavior patterns. You can use it to spot signs of violence, fights, robberies, and more.
5. Virtual Fencing
Artificial intelligence (AI) vision surveillance equipment often includes a function that allows for the virtual fencing off of critical areas. Virtual fences can be placed around areas of interest to watch for signs of infiltration.
6. Traffic Incident Detection
Algorithms for detecting and following vehicles are crucial in traffic control and surveillance. In addition to collecting traffic metrics, counting vehicles, implementing video-based tolling, analyzing traffic flow, and gaining insight into driver behavior, these systems find widespread use in smart city contexts. Detecting accidents, identifying vehicles on the highway, and categorizing vehicles are among other applications (profiling).
7. Vehicle Surveillance
License plate readers often work in tandem with other technologies, such as those that detect and track vehicles and other mobile objects. Vehicle models, makes, colors, and logos can all be identified with the use of image classification algorithms. Parking lot analytics frequently employ camera-based vehicle surveillance to detect and track the occupancy of numerous parking spaces using computer vision.
