A mosquito agarbatti is made from natural
ingredients like citronella and lemon grass to act a relief against mosquitoes
by keeping them away with its fumes.
Agarbatti fumes aren’t harmful when burned
in a well-ventilated room and in controlled numbers. However long-term exposure
to its fumes has been linked to hiked risk of heart diseases.
Generally, agarbatti is lighted to remove
the unpleasant odors and to create a peaceful aura for rituals. Since time
immemorial the fervent aroma of agarbatti is used during prayers and also as an
organic disinfectant capable to drive away insects.
Raw materials such as bamboo stick, adhesive
paste made of charcoal/wood power and jiggit/josh powder, and fragrance
ingredients are used to make agarbatti. These thin sticks of bamboo of around 8
to 12 inches in length is covered with an aromatic paste of natural
concentrates of scented blossoms or other significant fragrant wood like sandal
wood, etc.
Diethyl phthalate (DEP) plasticizer
chemical (odorless and colourless liquid) is used to make agarbatti. However
there is a huge range of herbal agarbattis in the market today which are widely
used.
