Hardness tester isa machine or device that evaluates and indicates the hardness of a materialusually through the measurement of the effect on its surface of a localizedpenetration by a standardized rounded or pointed indenter of diamond, carbide,or hard steel. In fact, hardness testing machines perform three common kinds ofscientific hardness tests: the Brinell hardness test, the Rockwell hardnesstest, and the Vickers hardness test. The Rockwell hardness test is an easyprocess to carry out and more precise than other kinds of evaluation. While theBrinell hardness test is applied to evaluate materials that are too coarse orthat have an exterior that is too rough for other test techniques, the VickersHardness test uses a diamond indenter to make a dimple that is measured andtranslated into a hardness value.
In industrialsetting, the purpose of the hardness test is to determine the suitability of amaterial for a given application, conformance to a specification, standard, orparticular treatment. The materials to be tested of hardness are subjected toheat treatment or thermal process and they are used in numerous engineeringdesign applications. The hardness property is mandatory since it directlycorrelates to the materiala s performance and suitability. In technical terms, amateriala s resistance to stand general functionality generally increases withincreasing hardness. For mechanical equipment, hardness is so necessary that itcan withstand the functional purpose it has been manufactured like moving partsof elevator shafts.
Typesof Hardness Tests
Indentationhardness test: This is the most common hardness tests performedacross several industries since materials are subjected to continuous loading. This hardness is measured on a scale known as the Rockwell Scale.
Scratchhardness test: This is commonly performed on brittle materials suchas ceramics and minerals since they do not undergo plastic deformation. Thishardness test is quantified on a scale known as the Mohs scale.
Reboundhardness test: This addresses a materiala s elastic hardness, asopposed to its plastic or indentation hardness. During rebound hardness tests, the material absorbs the impact energy from a diamond-tipped hammer and returnsit. This leads the hammer to bounce after it strikes the surface.

FAQs Related to Hardness Tester
What is the function of hardness?-
Is hardness fundamental property of materials?+
Hardness is not a fundamental material property. Rather it is viewed in terms of other properties such as strength, elasticity and ductility to understand how these properties relate to each other. For example, it is possible that a material may be hard, but it can also be brittle. This attribute, therefore, limit the materialâs usage in specific applications since it lacks hardness.
