Glazed Vitrified Tile

Glazed vitrified tiles are tiles that have an impervious layer or coating of another vitreous substance. This coating is done to color or waterproof the tiles. Glazed vitrified tiles come in a wide assortment of designs, art works and also with a variety of surface textures like wood grain, bamboo, stone etc. These tiles have a hard and glossy surface with optimal resistance to water and chemicals.

Glazed vitrified tiles are generally more expensive compared to other tiles. However, with the introduction of digital printing techniques, their cost is reducing gradually, resulting in increased usage of these tiles by people. These days, glazed tiles are extensively being used in living spaces across various commercial and industrial buildings. Also, due to their superior structural properties, these are being favored over other tiles when it comes to tiling bathrooms, kitchens etc.

Manufacturing Process of Glazed Vitrified Tiles

Raw materials like clay, china clay, ball clay, wollastonite chips and pitchers are mixed and ground thoroughly. Afterwards, the mixture is unloaded into an agitator

The material is then passed through filter press to get rid of soluble salts for making a plastic body.

The plastic body is then dried in a drier and then fed into a pan mill.

The output from the pan mill is stored in vertical silos.

The material is now ready for pressing tiles. The pressed tiles are now dried for at least 20 hours.

The dried tiles then undergo firing for another 20 hours. Afterwards, the tiles are allowed to cool naturally.

The cooled tiles are now ready for use after undergoing testing through various methods.

Test Standards for Glazed Vitrified Tiles

For ensuring a defect free and longer life, glazed vitrified tiles go through the following tests after manufacture :

Modulus of rupture test

War page test

Apparent porosity test

Crazing test

Scratch hardness test
