A Direct Current(DC) motor is a type of rotary electric motor that converts direct current (DC) electrical energy into mechanical energy. The most common motors are those that rely on magnetic field forces. Almost all kinds of DC motors have mechanisms, whether electromechanical or electronic, that regularly changes the direction of current in a portion of the motor.

DC motors were the first widely used motors because they could be powered by existing direct-current lighting power distribution systems. The speed of a direct current motor can be varied over a wide range by varying the supply voltage or changing the strength of current in its field windings. Small DC motors are found in tools, toys, and appliances. The universal motor is a thin and light brushed motor that can actually function on direct current which is used for portable power tools and appliances. Larger DC motors are now used in electric vehicle propulsion, elevator and hoist drives, and steel rolling mill drives. With the advent of power electronics, it is now possible to replace DC motors with AC motors in many applications.

Different Parts of DC Motor:

A DC motor is made up of the following major components:

Armature or Rotor: A DC motor's armature is a cylinder made of magnetic laminations that are insulated from one another. It is perpendicular to the cylinder's axis. The armature is a rotating component that revolves around its axis and is separated from the field coil by an air gap.

Field Coil or Stator: A DC motor field coil is a non-moving component on which a magnetic field is created by winding. A cylindrical cavity exists between the poles of this electromagnet.

Commutator: The commutator of a direct current motor is a cylindrical structure made of copper segments stacked together but kept separate by mica. A commutator's primary function is to supply electrical current to the armature winding.

Brushes: A DC motor's brushes are made of a graphite and carbon structure. These brushes carry current from the external circuit to the rotating commutator. As a result, we can conclude that the commutator and brush unit are concerned with transferring power from the static electrical circuit to the mechanically rotating region or rotor.
