In short, antacids are a combination of
calcium, magnesium, and aluminum salts which neutralize the acid in the
stomach. They also inhibit pepsin, an enzyme that plays a role in protein
digestion. Pepsin works with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to provide the
acidic environment necessary to digest food. In addition, certain antacids
include a foaming agent called alginate that floats on top of the stomach
contents and prevents acid from coming into contact with the esophagus.
Antacids come in various forms including
tablet, liquid (syrup), chewable gummy, and tablet that needs to be dissolved
in water to drink.
Antacids are used to treat symptoms of
excess stomach acid, including symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn, or
indigestion.
What are the symptoms of acid reflux?
The normal symptoms of acid reflux are
heartburn, chest pain, belching, coughing, and regurgitation.
What is gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD?
According to various studies, about 20
percent of adults have chronic acid reflux. This is a condition caused by the
flow of contents from the stomach upward into the esophagus and is known as
gastroesophageal reflux disease (or GERD).
There are many foods that can fight acid
reflux and heartburn effectively if consumed regularly. The top among them are oatmeal,
bananas, salad greens, yogurt, and ginger.
What food should you avoid during acid reflux or heartburn?
If you are suffering from acid reflux or
heartburn avoid fried, fatty foods, citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate,
peppermint, carbonated beverages, coffee, and alcohol.
What is acid reflux?
Acid reflux is a condition in which
acid-containing contents in the stomach persistently leak back up into the
esophagus. Acid reflux can sometimes include regurgitation, bitter taste,
persistent dry cough, pain when lying down, and trouble swallowing.
Heartburn is very common during pregnancy; because
the uterus pushes on the stomach which forces stomach acid up the esophagus causing
heartburn. Having said that, pregnant women should use antacids only after a doctor’s
consultation. Plus they should avoid antacids that contain sodium bicarbonate,
which could affect the fetus. Additionally, pregnant women should not take
antacids containing aspirin.
Are there any side-effects of taking antacids?
Yes, some people complain of side-effects
after taking antacids which might include diarrhea, constipation, inhibited
bone mineralization, and fluid retention or alkalosis.
