Busbar

A Busbar is metal bar designed for conducting electrical current in large amount. Aluminium and copper are two most common metals used in the production busbars. The structure of this metallic strip is rigid and flat with the capacity of carrying more current than cables having the same cross-sectional area. That is one of the factors that busbars are used for high-voltage connection in vehicles operated with electrical current. It can distribute AC current in electrical panels of homes to different circuit breakers.

In terms of design, busbars can be produced in flat strips, rods and solid bars. The rods can both be solid and hollow tubes depending on the application requirements. Busbars are typically used as a junction in electrical circuit where incoming current is exchanged with the outgoing current. One of the main advantages of using busbars is that it allows new circuit to branch off from anywhere rather than just branching out from the main supply. This provides flexibility in electrical distribution network and removes the compulsion of creating distribution channels only from the main supply point.

Types of Busbars

There are three main types of busbars elaborated as follows:

Single Busbar System a Single busbar system uses only one busbar in the system. However, to this single busbar some incoming and outgoing lines can be connected. For instance, two 11KV incoming lines can be connected with the help of isolators and circuit breaker. In this system, circuit breakers can be added anywhere for making a single busbar sectionalized arrangement. A major advantage of this type of busbar system is that any anomaly on one section of the busbar does not lead to entirely shutting down of the system.

Double Bus-bar System a In a double busbar system, high voltage and low voltage busbars are replicated. In such systems, any of the two sections can be used when needed. The use of system at will is facilitated by busbar coupling switch that assist in changing from one busbar to the other. Double busbar system allows for repair of one of the system if that is down while keeping the other operational all the time.

Ring Bus-bar system a in such arrangement, two circuit breakers are made created for one line and two for another. Hence, in this system there are always two parallel systems of busbars that part of circuit; thus, failure of one does not affect the functioning of the other.
