Ellagic acid is a naturally occurring phytonutrient, chemically belonging to the phenol compound. It is a phenolic lactone compound found in a variety of fruits and vegetables. It occurs in particularly high concentrations in hirda, behera, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, grapes and many other berries, and in nuts such as walnuts and pecans (Daniel, E.M. et al., 1989). It is present in plants in the form of hydrolyzable tannins called ellagitannins. Ellagitannins are esters of glucose with hexahydroxydiphenic acid; when hydrolyzed, they yield ellagic acid in numerous plants such as those mentioned above.
