Bobbin Lace

Bobbin lace is a type of handmade lace which is also known as Pillow lace or bone lace in various parts of the world. These laces are made with a variety of multiple thread weaving techniques, where groups of threads are plaited, interwoven and twisted. Traditionally made from linen, silk, wool and cotton threads, bobbin laces are presently made from an extensive variety of natural fibers, synthetic fibers, precious metals wires and other filaments as well.


These textile items are usually created by twisting and braiding lengths of threads or yarns which are wrapped onto bobbins for easy and simple management. The weaving of lace textile is held in place with pins placed in a lace pillow. The pattern or design is determined by the placement of pins on the pillow.


Brief Introduction

Bobbin laces evolved in the 16th century in Italy from braid making and the art of making elaborate trimmings or edgings, popularly known as passementarie. Also known as buckinghamshire bobbin lace, honiton bobbin lace etc., fine gold and silver threads in diverse attractive colors and bleached linen yarn were used to design these laces.

Bobbin Laces : Cleaning and Maintenance

Made from both coarse and fine yarns, bobbin laces are light in weight and easy to maintain.

These can be cleaned using mild detergent or liquid soap and cold water to enhance their durability.

Hand wash is recommended for these delicate laces instead of machine wash.
