1 - Polyester, PET or Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET or PETE)

PET, often known as polyethylene terephthalate, is a type of non-woven fibre. It is different from the typical plastic bag we see in the supermarket. This type of plastic polymer is primarily used for food and beverage packaging due to its ability to prevent oxygen from entering and spoiling the contents. It also helps prevent carbon dioxide from escaping from carbonated drinks.

Although PET is most likely to be accepted by recycling programmes, this form of plastic contains antimony trioxide, a substance that is considered carcinogenic and may cause cancer in living tissue.

Two types of plastic are high-density polyethylene (HDPE).

High-density polyethylene plastic, or HDPE, is unique from other types because it has very long, almost unbranched polymer chains that make it extremely dense and therefore stronger and thicker than PET. The supermarket bag, opaque milk, juice, shampoo and prescription bottles are all made from the plastic known as HDPE.

PP is often used for hot food containers as it is stronger and more heat resistant. It has a middle strength quality between LDPE and HDPE. PP is used in disposable nappies and sanitary pad liners, as well as car parts and thermal vests.
