Chemical Fume Hood

A Chemical Fume Hood is equipment designed to exhaust dangers fumes emanated from chemicals in a factory, laboratory or an industry. These are installed at places where chemical experiments are conducted or chemicals are processed that release fumes which are vapours or gas with a string smell and dangerous to inhale. Types of Chemical Fume Hoods

Constant Air Volume Hoods

The constant air volume (CAV) fume hood continuously exhausts the same quantity of air regardless of sash position. When the sash is lowered and raised, the velocity at the hood's face varies. EH&S regularly inspects constant air volume hoods and marks the aperture that gives the proper face velocity (see image at left).

Variable Air Volume Hoods

Some newer types, known as variable air volume (VAV) hoods, adjust airflow based on sash height and maintain a face velocity of 100 feet per minute at all sash heights. EH&S inspects VAV hoods but does not indicate the sash height because the speed is 100 feet per minute.

A display (shown at right) on VAV fume hoods displays whether the hood is in "normal operation" or "standby operation" mode. An "emergency purge" button on the fume hood monitor boosts airflow through the hood and may be used to remove air pollutants from the lab quickly.
