Cultivators

A Cultivator isa piece of farm machinery used for secondary tillage. In one sense, the name refers to frames with teeth (also known as shanks) that pierce the soil as they are dragged linearly through it. Machines that use rotary motion of discs or teeth to achieve a similar result are referred to in another sense. A good example is the rotary tiller.

Cultivators stir and completely destroy the soil before planting (to aerate the soil and prepare a smooth, loose seedbed) or after the crop has begun to grow (to kill weedsa controlled disturbance of the topsoil close to the crop plants kills the surrounding weeds by uprooting them, burying their leaves to disrupt their photosynthesis, or a combination of the two). Cultivators with teeth are often similar in appearance to chisel ploughs, but their purposes are different. Cultivator teeth are used to control weeds closer to the surface, whereas chisel plough shanks are often used to end things hardpan beneath the earth. As a result, cultivating requires far less power per shank than chisel ploughing.

Uses of Cultivators:
