Self Erecting Cranes
Self erecting cranes are a type of tower crane, which are also popularly known as self assembling or kangaroo cranes. The main specialty of these cranes is that these can erect their telescopic boom automatically according to the size of a tower or other construction applications. Self erecting cranes consist of a telescopic boom with a number of tube attachments. A hydraulic or other power mechanism extends or retracts the tubes for assembling or disassembling of telescopic boom. Lifting capacity of these cranes can range from 1.3 to 10 tons with a span between 16 to 37 meters, depending on the model and other specifications.
Parts:
Basic parts of the self erecting cranes are as follows:
Base a This is very important for any crane, which decides the crane's stability. Base can be both static(installed on plain ground) or non static platform (mounted on some vehicle or moving object)
Telescopic boom a These are vertical hoisting part of the self erecting cranes, which can assemble or erect according to the height of construction
Slewing unit a This is the mobile unit of the self erecting cranes, which is capable of rotating almost 360 degrees. The rotation of the crane around its own axis is called slewing.
Operator's cabin a The cabin has all controlling switches for operating a crane. The cabin is comfortably located in such a way that none of the crane's operation would hinder operator's visibility
Safety switches : A special feature of Self Erecting Cranes.
Self Erecting Cranes are incorporated with safety or emergency switches for avoiding any kind of accidents :
Maximum load limit switch - This switch along with other accessories, monitors the pull (strain) on the cable and thus does not allow the maximum load limit to cross 18 tons. If crane crosses the load limit then this switch trips the motor and gives audio and visual alarms.
Load moment limit switch a This switch along with other accessories ensures the load moment (tonne- meter) rating does not exceed beyond the specified limit. If crane crosses the given limit, then this switch trips hoist motor and traversing motors with audio and visual alarm.
Tips to Be Kept in Mind While Operating a Self Erecting Crane
The erection sequence should be strictly followed as per manufacturers' recommendation.
After erecting these cranes, surveyors should conduct thorough inspections to check crane structure, spare parts etc.
Person who is designated for operating these cranes must be licensed and well trained.
