What are Red Bricks?
Red bricks are bricks that are very old and have been used extensively in the construction of buildings and many structures. They are the main primary materials in construction and they are made from clay. They are different from concrete blocks which are produced by using cement and many fine aggregates. The red bricks are generally orange in colour and are easy to work with. The main difference between red bricks and concrete bricks are as follows:
Types of Red Bricks
There are different types of Red Bricks. These are categorized into the following categories:
a. On the basis of the method of manufacturing and
b. On the basis of the shape
Now on the basis of the manufacturing method, the red bricks are further categorized as follows:
i. Unburnt or Sun-dried Bricks
These unburnt bricks are generally produced from clay which is naturally dried under the sun after molding. It absorbs the heat from the sun for drying and is not that strong in nature.
ii. Burnt Clay Bricks
These are other types of bricks that are generally produced from clay that is not dried naturally under the sun but is dried by burning inside a kiln of a factory. These are the most widely used red bricks and the burnt clay red bricks are classified into the following:
a. First Class Bricks: These prove to be the best red bricks in quality compared to the other classes.
b. Second Class Brick: These are second best and they are ground molded and burnt in kilns to dry. They have standard sizes; however, they are irregular and a bit rough in shape and color.
c. Third Class Bricks: These red bricks are not burnt fully and hence they have a reddish-yellow color.
d. Fourth Class Bricks: These are low-grade quality bricks and they can be crushed easily hence they are mainly used as aggregates in the manufacturing of various constructing materials.
Red Bricks Size
The red bricks are rectangular in shape and have a rough surface. The red bricks are generally available in sizes of 190 x 90 x 40mm and also 190 x 90 x 90mm and there are some which are non-modular sizes of 230 x 110 x 30mm and 230 x 110 x 70 mm. However, the standard sizes that are commercially available for concrete bricks are the ones having lengths of 600, 500, or 400 mm, the height of around 100mm-200 mm, and the width from 50-300 millimeters. However, the dimension of both bricks can differ depending on the different manufacturers.
Red Bricks Uses
Red bricks are very popular bricks for construction and they are one of the oldest materials for constructing and building structures. They have been used as a structural material for the construction of various structures which include
a. Buildings
b. Arches
c. Foundations
d. Pavement
e. Bridges.
They have been commonly used for building many structures for aesthetic purposes for good landscaping, architectural designs, facing works, and many others. They are used in making houses, especially in cold areas as they are great insulators and can store heat by absorbing energy in the daytime and releasing the heat at night. This is a great way of keeping the houses warm, especially in winter.
Compared to other bricks, red bricks are way more durable than any other and they are hard therefore can withstand extreme weather conditions, and harsh winds and can store heat keeping the house cool in summer and warm in winter. These bricks produce very less waste and can have a very less environmental impact and can be considered eco-friendly and are very useful. The red bricks because of their good compressive strength, are considered good materials for construction and can be used for various types of ordinary construction. The raw material for its production can be easily available and it has a very low maintenance cost. Another good thing about utilizing red bricks is that they are highly resistant to fire and can be recycled and reused easily. For construction related to sound, they have a good sound performance capable of blocking the various noises coming from outside the building.
Red Bricks Price
When it comes to the Red bricks price, they alone are cheap but the cost of their production and construction is a bit high as the overall cost includes the cost of mortar which demands more capital as mortar demand is also high. In the Indian market, one red brick cost approximately Rs.3 to Rs. 7 and are easily available everywhere at a reasonable and affordable price. The average cost of one brick is generally Rs 5.50, however, this depends on the quantity that one orders.
