In general, printers and laser printers are more expensive than inkjet printers and inkjet printers are less expensive than laser printers. Inkjet printers are capable of printing on a wide variety of material, including picture paper with a glossy finish, textured stationery, and even some textiles. The sole difference between an inkjet printer and a printer with an ink tank is that inkjet printers acquire their ink from isolated cartridges, whereas ink tank printers have bigger ink reservoirs that feed ink into the cartridges through a tube. Toner cartridges usually have serial number written on them. To locate this number, take the cartridge out of the printer. To get the cartridge number, either uses the manual that came with the printer or go online and enter the printer's model. The instructions for using the printer should be included in the packaging it arrived in. The printer's compatible cartridges will usually be listed on the package itself. Locate the model of the printer on the maker's webpage. If you see "Cartridge number" or "Cartridge kind," that's where you'll find the cartridge's identifying number. In order to find the ink cartridge in the store quickly, jot down the numbers on a sheet of paper or bring the manual with.

Companies can turn a profit by charging high prices for ink cartridges. In general, printers are sold at a loss. It is not the sale of printers themselves, either inkjet or laser, but rather the consumables associated with them, that generate profit for the manufacturer. The maker has the last say on the cost and quality of the product. Companies that produce ink put in a lot of effort to find the optimal combination of pigment, dye, and medium so that ink can form a stable, compact droplet suitable for high-resolution printing, as Williams puts it. Ink for inkjet printers may cost anywhere from $13 to $75 per ounce, according to a 2013 report from Consumer Reports.
