Handmade Lace
Handmade laces are the most beautiful and intricate of all laces, these are decorative fabrics that are made by inter twisting threads to form a specific pattern. Handmade laces are the finest quality laces and are a novelty for people. These consist of neat, clean and precise loops, thus beautifying the end product much more as compared to machine made laces.
In a carefully woven handmade lace, threads won't be fuzzy. Also after magnifying, you would notice how precise the thread lines are and how clearly visible is the intricate decorative work, that has been done on these laces.
In medieval times, almost all laces were hand made; but, the production of handmade laces is reducing with time owing to some factors, like the lack of lace makers, creation of handmade laces being time taking, lesser wastage of raw materials in the manufacture of machine made laces etc.
Two Major Categories of Handmade Laces:
Needle lace - Made using a needle and a thread, it's the most flexible of all lace making techniques. These consist of a pattern being drawn on a piece of parchment, the threads are then laid along the lines of the pattern. An example of needle lace is the Venetian Gros Point (Gros Point de Venise).
Bobbin Lace - Made using bobbins and a pillow, also called as pillow lace. These are made from a number of threads that are wound around small bobbins and are then attached to pins on a cushion. The pattern is drawn and stretched over a pillow. Using pins, various meshes and openings are created on the patterns with threads. Some examples of bobbin laces are mechlin, brussels, honiton etc.
