Calculating GSM involves multiplying the sample's weight in grams by 1000, then dividing that number by the sample's area in square centimeters. The environment benefits most from using lighter, high-quality papers. The general public tends to believe that typical 80gsm sheets are thicker than 75gsm papers, and this was undoubtedly the case a decade or more ago. To counter this, modern paper mills can produce 75gsm sheets that are just as thick as the industry standard 80gsm.

Even though it's thick enough for pencil drawings, ink or marker could bleed through if someone uses too much pressure. Most home printer paper is between 90 and 100 gsm in weight. Paper's thickness can vary depending on its texture, fiber content, and density; however, 100 GSM paper would have a thickness of around 0.147 millimeters. In our opinion, photocopy paper is between 90 and 100 gsm. What receives when anyone buys a pack of 500 A4 sheets at the grocery store is ideal for routine printing jobs like newsletters, handouts, and administrative paperwork.
