Graphite electrodes are made from petroleum coke mixed with coal tar pitch (binder). It is then forced against a die to take the shape and then baked to carbonize the coal tar pitch, and finally graphitized at temperature of 3000°C.
Graphite electrodes are widely used in an electric arc furnace to carry electricity for melting metal or metal scrap. Synthetic graphite electrodes are used for making moulds while graphite carbon electrodes are used for aluminium smelting (extracting aluminium).
