Forced Convection Apparatus
The forced convection apparatus is an equipment used for heat transfer through a fluid in the presence of bulk fluid motion( the term fluid here encompasses both liquid and gas). This apparatus consists of components such as a test pipe, centrifugal blower, an orifice meter, voltmeter, ammeter and a multi channel digital temperature.
Forced convection in itself is a complicated process wherein the dual activities of fluid motion as well as heat conduction are carried out simultaneously. Basically forced convection is of two types, one being natural in which all fluid motion is caused by natural means such as the buoyancy effect. The second type of forced convection is the artificial convection wherein a fluid is forced to flow over a surface or in a tube by external means such as a fan or pump.
Forced convection apparatus simplifies the complicated process of forced convection. The apparatus is widely used in air conditioning, central heating, steam turbines and many more. An overview :
The apparatus consists of an electrically powered fan that forces air through a long pipe having an orifice plate mounted on it. The orifice plate determines the flow rate of air from the fan by measuring the pressure difference across the orifice plate. The pressure difference across the orifice plate is also displayed on the digital display of the apparatus.
The test section of the apparatus has an internal coiled heater to provide heat to itself. This heating power is controlled by the variac that can deliver variable power to the coiled heater. In addition there are two analog displays for displaying the voltage and the current being supplied to the coiled heater.
Then there are 7 thermocouples placed along the test section to measure it's surface temperature and also the air temperature around it. The measured temperatures are constantly displayed on the digital display.

Safety Guide While Using The Forced Convection Apparatus
In case of any fire, vacate the room immediately and stay as far away as possible from the apparatus.
The room housing the forced convection apparatus should be properly ventilated so as to allow regular entry of fresh air into the room.
If any electrical component of the apparatus overheats, then turn off the apparatus immediately.
In case of the main switch failing during an unforeseen situation, follow the lock out procedure instructions.
Periodically check the apparatus for bare and damaged wires.
