It's not unusual for a Buchholz relay to trip for no reason. Max Buchholz is believed to have created what is now known as the Buchholz relay. Gas actuated relays, also known as Buchholz relays, are often fitted between the conservator tank and the main tank in electrical transformers of the conservator type. A Buchholz Relay can do three tasks, while a gas-actuated relay can only perform two. Common Buchholz relay configurations include two floats and a single baffle plate. The relay housing has two levels, where the high and low floats are placed. A spindle extending vertically through the relay housing is where the baffle plate is fastened. When a transformer develops a slight electrical fault, the insulating liquid in the tank gets too hot, releasing tiny gas bubbles.
Typically, a Buchholz relay will include a pair of contact points. Both are designed to function differently in the case of an internal fault: one for moderate gas accumulations and the other for massive oil displacement. The former triggers an alert, whereas the latter is often hardwired to the breaker trip relay. The contacts on a Buchholz relay often come in pairs.
