Black Pepper

The black pepper husk is the skin of black pepper and has the traits of the peppercorn in terms of hotness and aroma. 

Black pepper can be found in the markets packaged in different materials, including gunny bags, HDPE bags, LDPE bags, PP bags or glass container. It is available in different packaging sizes such as 100 gm, 200 gm, 500 gm, 10 kg, 50 kg, etc.

Black pepper is mostly used for flavoring various food items, for preservation, as well as, traditional medicinal purpose including Ayurveda.

Good quality black peppercorns will be of relatively uniform color. Darker the peppercorns, better will be their flavor. 

Properly stored black pepper kept away from moisture and fluctuating temperature have a shelf life of about 3 to 4 years. Properly stored, ground black pepper will generally stay at best quality for about 4 years. 

Consuming black pepper daily in moderation is actually beneficial to a person. However it is recommended not have more than 1-2 teaspoon of black pepper every day.

People take black pepper for relief from arthritis, asthma, upset stomach, bronchitis, a bacterial infection that causes diarrhea, colic, depression, diarrhea, gas, headache, sex drive, menstrual pain, stuffy nose, sinus infection, dizziness, discolored skin (vitiligo), weight loss, and cancer.

Black pepper is cultivated to a large extent in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and also in Maharashtra. In the last decade or so, the north-eastern states and Andaman & Nicobar Islands too have started a small portion of production of black pepper in the country.
