Current Transformer

A CurrentTransformer (CT) is a transformer that either diminishes or multiplies alternating current. It generates a secondary current that is proportional to the primary current. Current transformers are power system current-sensing units found in generating stations, electrical substations, and industrial and commercial electric power distribution. Although some transformers, including current transformers, use an air core, they all have a primary winding, a core, and a secondary winding. Current transformers, voltage transformers, and potential transformers are examples of instrument transformers. Instrument transformers reduce large voltage or current values to small, standardized values that can be handled by measuring instruments and protective relays. Instrument transformers protect measurement and protection circuits from the primary system's high voltage. A current transformer produces a secondary current that is precisely proportional to the primary current. The connectivity features are not burdened by the current transformer.

Types of Current Transformer:

Indoor Current Transformer: In low-voltage circuits, indoor current transformers are commonly used. They are classified into several types, including window, wound, and bar. The wound type, like the basic type, has two windings, primary and secondary. Because of their high accuracy and high values of primary ampere turns, these are used in summing cases. The bar-type instrument has primary and secondary cores. The primary bar is an important part of this form. Because of the magnetization effect in the core, the accuracy of this device can be reduced.

Outdoor Current Transformer: High-voltage circuits, such as switchyards and substations, use outdoor current transformers. These are available in two varieties: SF6 gas insulation and oil-filled. When compared to oil-filled form transformers, SF6 insulated current transformers are lightweight. The pinnacle tank can be connected to the primary section of the current transformer, which is introduced as a live tank construction form. Small bushings are used in this structure because both the primary conductor and the tank have the same capacity.

Bushing Current Transformer: This transformer is similar to the bar form in that the secondary section and core are installed in the primary conductor section. The transformer's secondary section can be twisted into a circular shape that differs from the annular-shaped core. It is connected to the high-voltage bushings that run across power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and generators.

Portable Current Transformers: These transformers are highly accurate and are commonly used in power analyzers and high precision ammeters. These transformers are available in a variety of configurations, including clamp ON portable, flexible, and split-core. These devices are commonly used to provide isolation for sensing instruments from high-voltage circuits.

Protection Current Transformer: A protection current transformer is designed to perform well in over current conditions. This enables the specific relays to precisely control the fault currents, even in very high current situations. The secondary output is used to activate a protective relay, which can isolate the section of the energy circuit that is experiencing a fault state.
