PRD Tech biotrickling filters are highly effective in treating hydrogen
sulfide and other primary sources of wastewater odors, including
ammonia, mercaptans, aldehydes, amines and reduced sulfur compounds.
Shown in the adjacent photo is an installation at a municipal
wastewater plant in northern Kentucky where a four-stage biofil-tration
system is treating 15,000 cfm of odorous gases generated from the
thermal conditioning of waste activated sludge. The system consists of
two 6' diameter biotrickling filter vessels preceded by a packed tower
scrubber to neutralize acidic components of the inlet gases. A dilute
solution of activated sludge was used initially to seed the randomly
packed synthetic media inside the biotrickling filters.
Installed in 2000, the system has been effectively treating high
concentrations of volatile organics from the sludge conditioning
process as well as headspace air from the raw sludge storage tanks.
Over 99% of the odors from the raw sludge and heat treated sludge are
eliminated without the use of costly chemicals or adsorptive media.System Design Specifications
