What is Shuttering?

Civil engineering has transformed ever since it began with the dawn of civilization. Human need the erection of building and other civil infrastructure for their dwelling, business, facilities like hospitals, hotels, transportation hubs, dams etc. For every new development plan, civil engineering provides the backbone of it. With the evolution of technology, the methods involved in civil engineering have also upgraded itself. Shuttering is essential to the building industry. It must be strong enough to support all of the weights involved in operations and then maintain its form when the concrete dries. It may be used as either temporary or permanent moulds to keep the concrete in place when it pours until it hardens and becomes strong enough to stand on its own.

On the building site, shuttering is utilised as a temporary mould into which concrete is poured to create the necessary structural form. Although steel, glass fibre reinforced polymers, and other materials may also be used to make shuttering, wood is the traditional material used in shuttering construction. Temporary wood, plywood, metal, or other materials used to hold wet concrete mixtures until they are strong enough to support themselves are known as shuttering or formwork. It supports surfaces that are level, vertical, inclined, or supports cast concrete that has the necessary size and form. Additionally, the formwork creates the necessary concrete surface finish. A structure's shuttering serves as a mould for the construction of its auxiliary components. Concrete is simply poured into the mould; it will later solidify and become sufficiently strong. The concrete must be supported by the compact types of structures until it achieves the necessary degree of strength.

The following general performance characteristics are necessary to satisfy the demands of concrete construction:

  • It must have the strength to withstand any kind of dead load or live load.
  • With the right supports and bracing, it should keep its size and form.
  • The shuttering's joints need to be secure against leaking and made of cement grout.
  • To maintain its form, it should be firmly built and adequately propped and braced on both the horizontal and vertical axes.
  • It needs to be constructed with recyclable and reusable materials.
  • The shuttering's material need to be affordable and widely accessible as well as be as light.
  • Levels should have a flat surface, and they should be precisely set to the required line.
  • When exposed to the outdoors, the shuttering material shouldn't deform or change shape.
  • The shuttering's design should allow for the removal of different components in the proper order without causing concrete damage.

Difference Between Formwork and Shuttering

The phrases "formwork" and "shuttering" are often used in the concrete building sector. These phrases are sometimes used interchangeably. The general word used to describe the forming process is "formwork." Shuttering is the term used to describe the temporary moulds used to keep the wet concrete in place until it has dried and cured. Both formwork and shuttering techniques will often be required for projects of various sizes. However, despite the differences in the materials used, both of these methods achieve the same goal.

Application of Shuttering Material

Shuttering often comes in four different types, namely Metal shutters, Wooden board shutters, brick masonry shutters and plastic shutters.

Metal Shutters: The greatest kind of shuttering is made of steel shuttering plates since they are waterproof and strong enough to support the weight of cement and concrete. This shuttering may be utilised for any form needed for the task, whether it be horizontal, vertical, or another. It produces a flat surface with a pleasing look. This shuttering looks nice and follows the design shown in the architectural plans. The thickness of the plaster will be decreased if it is necessary. The strength of concrete with steel shuttering is noticeably stronger since it is water-tight. Metal shuttering can either be steel shuttering or aluminium shuttering.

Steel shuttering consists of panels made of thin steel plates that are fastened around the edges by tiny steel angles. An appropriate clamp or bolts and nuts may be used to secure the panel components together. Most bridge building projects employ this kind of shuttering. Due to its many reuses throughout a lengthy lifespan, steel shuttering is now growing in popularity. Although steel shuttering may be expensive, it may be utilised for many different projects and structures. The concrete surface may be finished extremely smoothly and evenly using steel shuttering. For round or curving constructions like tanks, chimneys, columns, tunnels, sewers, and retaining walls, it is ideally suited. Steel and aluminium shuttering are fairly comparable. The primary difference is that aluminium is less dense than steel, making formwork lighter. Prior to employing aluminium in a building project, it must be taken into account that it is less strong than steel. If several construction projects with the same repeated use are created, aluminium shuttering is cost-effective. The biggest drawback is that once the shuttering is built, no changes can be made.

Wooden Shutters: Contractors often employ hardwood plank shuttering because it is affordable and readily accessible. However, this kind of shuttering has significant drawbacks that impair the strength of concrete. Given that the boards are not of the same size and thickness, this shuttering is not water-tight. This discrepancy causes water and cement to run out of joints and into the ground, weakening the concrete. The RCC slab's bottom level is not level, the surface is uneven, and the plaster is thicker than it should be, leaving it vulnerable. Earthwork underneath may sink and cause issues as a result of cement slurry leaking through seams. In certain circumstances, concrete's weight is too much for hardwood planks to support. Wooden planks bend or deflect due to their poor strength. Occasionally, the planks would crack. Wooden shuttering can be done using either timber of hard plywood.

One of the first and still most popular types of formwork in the construction industry is timber shuttering. Normally, it is put together on site. However, the quality of the wood formwork must be thoroughly examined before use to ensure that it is termite-free. Timber shuttering also has two drawbacks that should be taken into account when utilising it: it has a limited lifespan and takes a long time in complicated projects. Timber shuttering should be utilised, but it should be chopped into pieces big enough to be reused. When labour costs are low or multiple concrete sections require flexible formwork, timber shuttering is typically preferred. A manufactured, unnatural wooden sheet known as plywood shuttering comes in a variety of thicknesses and sizes and is used to create concrete member forms. It is enduring, lightweight, and robust enough. One of the most used materials for decking, linings, and sheathing in shuttering is plywood. Similar qualities to those of timber shuttering, such as strength, durability, and light weight, also apply to plywood shuttering.

Brick Masonry Shuttering: Sometimes a labour contractor would employ temporary brick masonry made of mud to hold the sides of beams, fascia, etc. vertically. Avoid this shuttering at all costs. By soaking cement slurry, this method of shuttering weakens cement concrete. Additionally, because this shuttering cannot withstand the vibrator's pressure, no adequate compaction is created. This method of shuttering results in an uneven cement concrete surface and increased plaster thickness.

Plastic Shuttering: Another form of shuttering is the plastic shuttering. Interlocking panels or modular systems made of strong, lightweight plastic are used to create plastic shutters. It functions best in small, repetitive-task projects like low-cost housing developments. It can be applied to straightforward concrete structures. Plastic shuttering is suitable for large sections and multiple reuses and is lightweight and water-cleanable. Because many components are prefabricated, it has less flexibility than timber, which is its main disadvantage. These shuttering techniques are becoming more popular for large housing projects and similar-shaped structures. Plastic shutters are among the lightweight shutters, so handling and disassembly costs are lower. It is suitable for a sizable section. Multiple reuses are achievable with cautious usage and transportation; making it very cost-effective.

Every kind of shuttering and formwork will need bracing, or external support. The formwork or shuttering will be kept in place while the concrete cures using stabilisers, poles, or other types of materials. Stripping is the process of removing the formwork. Sometimes, stripped formwork may be put to use again (known as panel forms). In other cases, the shuttering or formwork will be permanently installed.

e) Permanent Insulated Shuttering
The best form is shuttering is the steel shuttering, however it is quite expensive.
The types of shuttering material are shuttering plates, channel shuttering, farma-round shape, beam bottom, scaffolding, cross bar, turn bolt, runner, shutter grill, join pin, U-head and several others.
After assembling the complete shuttering material, it is used support the vertical arrangements during casting of concrete for construction of highways, roofs, pillars or walls etc., whereas, framework is a whole process in relation to the construction of any structure.
The only reason of using shuttering oil before its casting is to remove the shutter material smoothly and easily, yet have hard and uniform finished concrete structure.
